Avett Brothers
Avett Brothers
For their fifteenth full-length release, The Avett Brothers came to us to design a layered visual experience that embodies the deeply personal and calmly existential collection of songs that make up their eponymous album. The final design articulates a visual language that frames the band’s exploration of spirituality, intimacy, and rootedness.

Overview
Through an in-person workshop at the brothers’ homes in North Carolina, “duality” emerged as an overarching theme. From the sink and rise refrain on “Forever Now” that’s also faintly etched into the vinyl records, to stitch and seam on “We Are Loved,” the interplay between time and distance, the eternal and momentary, life and death, cosmic and quotidian—the list could go on—is imbued in both the songs and the design.

Concept
A poetic, almost monastic spirituality is a core facet of The Avett Brothers’ work and lives, so we turned to the complex and contemplative diagrams and charts of ancient gnosticism and hermeticism for initial inspiration. From there, we expanded our range of influences to poetry, and the band’s own deeply place-based (and significantly rural Southern) lineages.
Symbolism
A key outcome from our concepting phase was the idea to represent the songs as a series of images that symbolize each song and connect with its core theme. Scott Avett, who is also a visual artist, created illustrations to be used as the symbols for each song. These were incorporated throughout the design, particularly in the packaging’s interior diagram, which charts the themes and dualities connecting different tracks. There, they revolve around one (of three) depictions of a creek that flows near the brothers’ childhood home, a site of constant reflection and inspiration to them.
Further motifs woven throughout the album include the shape of the speaker grate from their childhood church transformed into an embossed pattern on the cover, and the addition of a cryptic symbol that weaves in a monogram and several spiritual motifs.
Poetry
We drew upon poetic techniques (symbolism, metaphor, spatial rhythm, abstraction, etc.) to develop a distinct and evocative graphic system—a “poetics of The Avett Brothers.” Instead of a standard lyric booklet, we created a chapbook where each song was typeset as an experimental, free-verse poem.
Sustainability
The packaging ensemble uses a variety of paper finishes and production techniques—most notably blind embossing—to achieve a richly tactile experience.
