About the Role

TOOOT is a highly collaborative, hands-on studio with shared responsibilities across strategy, brainstorming, project management, and visual design. We’re looking for a San Francisco-based designer (or anywhere in the Bay Area, as long as you can work in person at our Mission District office). We take design very seriously, but the vibe in our office is light-hearted, fun, and collaborative.

Our ideal person is someone with a versatile skillset, deep understanding of design fundamentals, enthusiasm and aptitude for learning new skills on the go, and passionate about design’s role in shaping a brighter, kinder future for people and the planet.

Skills & Qualifications

Professional Experience

  • 5+ years of design and branding experience (excluding internships)

  • Ideally at small- to mid-size creative firms, but we will consider highly skilled applicants with 3+ years of freelance or in-house experience

Passionate about Causes

Environmental, social, and beyond—it can be anything, you just need to truly give a shit about having a positive impact

Strategy

  • Experience with the discovery/research process

  • Experience creating strategic insights and/or working with a strategist

  • Experience implementing strategy into a design concept/approach

Client/Project Management

  • Experience working with clients directly

  • Strong written and verbal interpersonal and communication skills

  • Ability to pair team resources with tasks to keep projects on schedule and budget

  • Willing to do a variety of tasks in an all-hands environment

Brainstorming & Concept

  • Ability to help brainstorm and define key concepts, and drive conceptually rigorous work

  • Experience identifying potential avenues for research, and carrying out research, in order to help formulate and support a creative concept

  • Balance creative experimentation with practical considerations

  • Able to present key project concepts clearly and succinctly (verbally or in writing)

Visual Design

  • Strong understanding of visual design fundamentals: typographic hierarchy, color sensitivity, layout principles

  • Able to work both independently and collaboratively on a project from strategy to finished product with a bonkers attention to detail

  • Detail-oriented, thorough, and meticulous in design execution; sensitive to consistency in style, spacing, layout, etc. across design applications

  • Obsessively passionate about typography, to the point where you talk about type so much that people ask you can you please not for like a single minute

Web Design

  • Understands WCAG best practices and how to make a design accessible to a broad audience with diverse needs

  • Strong experience and skill in designing for various screen sizes, from mobile to desktop

Software

Musts

Required proficiency in: Figma (familiarity with components, prototyping, and design systems) and Adobe Creative Cloud (Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop)

Ideal

Not Required (but realllllly ideal): Motion Design (AfterEffects and Rive) and 3D (Cinema4D and/or Blender)

Bonus

Notion Databases, Creative Coding, Video Editing and Color Grading (Premiere or DaVinci)

Responsibilities

Strategy

  • Conduct brand audits, competitive audits, and carry out audience analyses

  • Conduct interviews with key team members or advisors

  • Write clear, eloquent, and succinct project objectives, mission and vision statements, and golden circle diagrams (why/how/what)

  • Develop brand pillars/tone words that capture the strategy and client’s aspirations

  • Informed by the research and interviews, develop strategic insights that meet the project’s goals and inspire the subsequent visual design

  • Effectively summarize and communicate (in writing) the research and strategic insights

  • Create presentation decks that communicate strategy in a digestible, easy-to-understand, well-paced format

Creative/Design

Brainstorming and Concept

  • Brainstorm and develop rich, compelling, and strategy-driven design concepts aligned with each project’s style and voice and the client’s business and strategic goals

Visual Design

  • Branding: Design brand assets including logotypes, logomarks, color palettes, icons, and illustrations; select typefaces and develop layouts that are wow chef’s-kiss; translate designs into realistic mockups; develop comprehensive brand style guide documents

  • Motion: Design storyboards for motion concepts and develop motion graphics using 2D and/or 3D motion software

  • Web: Design detailed web prototypes with complex interaction animations

  • Print: Design print publications and product packaging

  • Help maintain TOOOT’s website, portfolio, and social media presence

Handoff and Oversight

  • Set up and maintain design files in easily legible and manageable ways for efficient handoff between designers (e.g. nondestructive editing best practices, retaining asset organization with proper links and smart objects)

  • Delegate tasks and offer helpful feedback to teammates

  • Prepare artwork for print production, including speccing Pantone colors and setting up artwork on dielines

  • Communicate with developers and/or print production partners to oversee projects from design handoff to finished product

Client/Project Management

  • Direct project management of assigned engagements, including the development and management of schedules, budgets/estimates, team-wide resourcing, etc. in our Notion database system

  • Organize and manage various project files, folders, and documents

  • Procure quotes and negotiate fees with strategic partners/freelancers and manage their services/deliverables

  • Communicate professionally, tactfully, promptly, and clearly with clients via email

Manage client relationships to ensure client satisfaction from project initiation through to completion, including:

  • Developing client/project-related correspondence including, but not limited to: handoff of deliverables, schedules, change orders, status reports, and any other necessary documents required by the client

  • Obtaining approvals and any necessary deliverables (e.g., content, imagery, etc.) from clients throughout the project

  • Participating in client meetings and calls concerning project-related topics including schedule, budget, and vendor/resource management
